Valley Forge National Historic Park

New Blog Lay out not working so good...

Hi everyone! My blog host, Blogger through Google has introduced a new dynamic posting template which I adore, flip tiles. However, as you can see, any of my photo's that are linked from my website (christmanimages.com) are grayed out and an additional click is required to view the photograph. I have reported this issue to Google and an another issue that is transparent to you the visitor. Sorry for the inconvenience. Sure hope they fix it soon! If not I will be switching to another blog site.

On to the photograph. This image was taken at Hopewell lake over the summer of 2011. While the Canoes make a pretty photograph, the water lilies you see in the background are taking over the lake. They were everywhere! I am not a biologist, but I can only assume that this is not a good thing. I have never seen water lilies grow in a lake this rapidly here in PA.

No Clouds Tonight!

The weather in my area of Southeaster PA has been cloudy and rainy for weeks. Tonight the clouds disappeared and the moon went down around 8pm. It was nice to be able to get out for a short time and capture the stars with the car head lights illuminating the trees.

Something Different (for me)

Something a little different for me. A selective color photograph. This year at the hot air balloon festival in Hughesville, PA I was looking for different ways to capture the balloons. When a flock of geese flew by, I thought, well, maybe this would be interesting. At home while processing the images from this outing, this image was not pretty because the light was not in the correct direction and the sun was too bright to capture the correct tonality. In other words, the geese were dark, the sky was too bright, and the hot air balloon had little color. The timing of the balloon festival came about when I was learning a new software program, Adobe Light Room. I was surprised how easy it was to convert the image to black and white and color in the image. I am enjoying my new software!

Tenth Anniversary, 9.11.2011, Twin Tower Memorial Lights

So glad to have been able to take a trip to Liberty State Park, in New Jersey to photograph the tenth Anniversary of 911. It was a humbling experience to be reminded of the tragedy that happened 10 years ago. This was the last image of our visit to Liberty State Park that night, and my favorite from that location! Pittsburgh at Night

The more I travel Pennsylvania, the more I fall in love with it. This past week I went to University of Pittsburgh to tour their campus with my daughter. Here is the same image captured in Pittsburgh in which I have processed in the computer two ways. The top with a day light white balance, the bottom with a cloudy white balance. I could have done this in camera with two different images, but I do rely on computer software to see what I can achieve with it. Amazing what you can do in the computer. More importantly, amazing what you can do with your camera!

Tranquility

With my car over packed, and my camera at my side, I headed up to the Endless Mountain Area of Pennsylvania on Friday to participate in the Bloomsburg Art Fest 2011 on Saturday. Upon arrival Friday evening, I was lucky enough to be presented with the sun setting and the fog rising off of the near by lake.

Tranquility summed up what I felt!

The Bloomsburg Art Fest 2011 was a wonderful event this year, as was last year. Meeting everyone who stopped by at the festival was a pleasure. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with everyone.

Perseid Meteor Shower 2011

It is near peak for the Perseid meteor shower so I took a drive to Green Lane Reservoir to see if I could spot some Meteors last night. The almost full moon was shinning brightly. Because of the full moon, I was not very optimistic about being able to spot any meteors. However, to my delight, the moon was illuminating the trees along this path, and the stars were very visible in the night sky. I did not see any meteors while on my visit, but I saw two after I got home.

Taking a Break

When I visited Seaside Heights NJ this summer, I took the opportunity to photograph the rides and boardwalk at night. For me, noise, flashy lights, and hustle bustle sums up the Seaside Heights, NJ boardwalk. The boardwalk can be fun, and there is always something to do! However, sometimes you just need a break to enjoy the ocean, and mother nature. The sound of the ocean over powers the the boardwalk noises. What I see in this image is someone taking a break to enjoy mother nature, and escape the hustle bustle for a little while.

Win Some, Lose Some

I have been shooting fireworks three of the past four days in various towns. Last night I attended the Lower Providence Township fireworks. I have had the idea of getting this barn in the foreground with fireworks in the background floating around in my mind for the past year. After arriving way too early to claim my fireworks spot, I set up my tripod only to discover I had no release plate on my tripod. I had left it at home. I then remembered I had a second tripod in the car which had a plate. Since I was alone, I had to pack up all my gear, blankets, etc. and walk all the way back to my car to retrieve the tripod that I could use. Then I tracked back to my spot. Phew, no one took my spot. I then got all set up, got the camera on the correct settings, the barn in the spot I had imagined, and achieved the perfect focus while it was still light out. Well, somehow between the time I set up, and when I began shooting the fireworks, I knocked the barn out of focus and did not realize it. I purposely darkened up the barn in my software to try and hide the out of focus issue. Maybe next year.

Chesapeake City Bridge

I took a little trip last night to Chesapeake City to photograph their fireworks display. I came home with lots of awesome images of fireworks. However, the above image was my favorite of the night. After the fireworks ended, all of the boats and folks were leaving the area. I was able to capture this image of the bridge, with the stars in the sky.

2011 Civil War Reunion, Pennypacker Mills PA

Where the 1860's meets 2011. The young lady is holding a big, modern camera. I suppose the folks who lived during the civil war would have thought of witch craft or aliens if they saw one of our modern cameras.

This past weekend I attended the Pennypacker Mills Civil war reunion. As always, it was a great history lesson. Thanks to everyone who makes this happen every year.

Brooklyn Bridge at Night

I went to the Big Apple with friends, and we explored this beautiful., historic bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1873, connects Brooklyn to Manhattan. The bridge not only allows cars to travel safely over the East River, it also has ample pedestrian and biking lanes. At the time of completion, the Brooklyn Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It's main span is 1,595.5 feet.

The Mountain Lion (also known as cougar, panther, puma, painter, catamount) is the second largest cat of North America (the Jaguar is the biggest). They used to roam throughout most of North America, but are now found mostly in the mountains and other uninhabited areas west of the Mississippi River, as well as a very small population in Florida known as the Florida Panther. I instantly knew that Dave would love the Hook, so the next week Dave and I went back. There were a few snow geese, hawks, and to our delight a Bald Eagle Close enough to capture some "keeper" images.

Male and Female Peregrine Falcon

Thanks to my nephew Ryan, we were made aware that a pair of Peregrine Falcons were being seen in the center of Norristown, Pa. They were often being seen on ledges about 10 stories up on one of the buildings near the County Courthouse. Beth and I made a run down, and were delighted to see both Falcons. Unfortunately, they were sitting on separate ledges, so we were unable to get both in a single image. These images were taken with our 200-500mm Tamron lens at 500mm and still had to be cropped down.

Had a blast with photo buds for some night images the other night. I tried for star trails, but the stars did not cooperate. In this shot, I loved how the clouds formed an X. I used a daylight setting in my raw convert software to achieve the blue sky.

Cool how the clouds and stars work together in this image. I used the Cloudy white balance setting in my raw converter to achieve the warm glow. The settings for this image are: f4, bulb setting for 71 second exposure, ISO 400. I did use a bit of noise reduction and sharpening in Paint Shop Pro.

Riding In

I got extremely lucky catching this panning image of the reenactors riding in. They came in from behind me; I was not aware they were there. So I swung the camera up and, luckily, got a sharp image of the riders. The riders were extremely dark, so I wanted to d a little work to make it presentable. This is an HDR image using one image that I had brightened up in RAW, in five different increments, and saving them as five different images. Then I merged them using Paint Shop Pro's HDR tool. I also masked in the riders from the best lightened image I had created.

I had the opportunity to paint with light last weekend. This fine colonial was not occupied, and I thought it would be interesting to try shining a very bright flash light on it to see how would turn out at night. This is a combination of two images using the lighten blend mode in Paint Shop Pro. I find night photography to be fascinating and fun. A problem with photographing at night this time of year is the cold!

Light Painting at Break Wind

I was wanting to photograph star trails since it was the new moon yesterday. I contacted my friends who have nick named their home Break Wind. The weather did not cooperate. The clouds were just hanging around obsuring the stars. I decided to use the cloud cover to my advantage and use my flash light to paint a barn on my friends property. Because of the camera's long exposure, the clouds appear to be streaking across the sky.

Hopefully, I will be able to get out again soon before the moon becomes too bright and the weather too cold.

Lower Providence Emergency Medical Services

If you read my blog earlier this week, this is the Lower Providence Emergency Medical Services welcoming Colonel MacMurtry home from the war. This is my favorite image of the LPEMS display from that evening. My original goal that evening was to capture Colonel MacMurtry passing through the arches of the ladder trucks. After a bit of time, I began to realize how much the men and women of our emergency departments do.

This post is to celebrate a hero coming home, and the hero's at home dealing with day to day emergencies that are so devastating to a few. Steam Train!

I cannot get enough of these trains! It is a bit hard to follow their schedule, and get in the correct location for photography. In this image, I was so close to the train, maybe too close, I got wet, my camera lens got wet all from the steam from the train. We spent all afternoon on Halloween driving around finding the best spots for the Strasburg trains.

I was hoping to find fall color for the train images, but this area does not lend itself to the reds and yellows I was imagining.

No Fall Color on this Foggy Mornin

A lot of fog, this day at the barn. I enjoyed the solitary feeling the fog created this day. I was after the fall foliage that day, only to find the fog had covered all of the trees with color. However, the fog made a great way to express a solitary view. New: I added a border/frame as many of my photo friends are now doing. I think it looks nice.

Sandy is Home!

My next door neighbor, Colonel Sandy MacMurtry, whom I respect very much, came home from the war after volunteering for 13 months. The neighborhood, Lower Providence Township Firemen, and police, made Sandy's escort home very exciting! As you can see, the firemen set their trucks at either end of the our street, and hung the American flag.

Sandy, we thank you for your service, and we thank you for being home again!

This weekend if you find yourself in the Pocono Mountains near Ricketts Glen State Park admiring the spectacular fall foliage, take some time out to stop in at the 24th Annual Pumpkin Festival, at the Ol' Country Barn. Christman Images, David & Beth, will have their many Ricketts waterfall, wildlife images, and many other Pennsylvania images beautifully displayed in our show tent. We would enjoy talking with you!
This weekend is most likely the peak for fall foliage in the area. I can say it is truly beautiful to witness the beauty in the mountains. Bring your camera along because you will find many colorful, and fun things to photograph.

The Pumpkin Festival will be held on Saturday, October 16th & Sunday the 17th from 10am till 5pm rain or shine.

Star Trails - Oaks, PA

Well, we tried for star trails at Valley Forge tonight, and got chased off by park rangers. So we decided to head for a small parking lot by 422. Cool you can see the the north star to the upper right as the stars rotate around them. The white and red streaks on the lower portion of the image are the headlights of cars traveling down the road. I sure hope to get out more to practice this interesting, fun photography!

This image was created by setting my camera on manual mode, f5, 30 second exposure, rapid fire mode, and locking my cable release. The result was 103 photographs. I then combined them in software using the lighten blend mode. Even though there is a ton of noise pollution, with this method you get some fantastic results! I also added a bit of Nik Software Sampler to give it a bit of an orange glow.

Sunrise at the beach! I had spectacular colors both Saturday and Sunday in Ocean City NJ this past weekend. This view shows the Atlantic City still lit at 6:00 am, before the sunrise at 6:20ish. I had the wonderful opportunity to enjoy both sunrises with two of my photo buds.

Ballons, everywhere!

I have never witnessed a balloon festival, and glad I did. This was in Phillipsburg, NJ. The whole process was amazing! There was the wonderful 4-h there, the rides, and just a great time. Amazing that the balloon captains can navigate there way with the air, absolutely something I would love to see, and photo. again.

The bridge to Lambertville

The after glow of the sunset was terrific for this Delaware River image. Sometimes 20 or more minuets after the sunset provides wonderful colors. The lights reflecting in the Delaware river, from the Lambertville Bridge, was truly beautiful. I enhanced this image using Nik Corel Sampler and Topaz adjust.

Fawn in the Morning

Valley Forge fawn. Seems like I waited an eternity for this fawn to move from the shadows into the glorious golden light that was gracing the fields of Valley Forge. As you can see, patience paid off as I was able to photograph this young one beautifully.

Almost Day Break at Valley Forge Chapel

Went to Valley Forge just before day break to catch what I hoped would be a great sunrise. Before going off to the huts to position myself for sunrise, I met a friend and photobud, Nancy at the Chapel. Not wanting to miss a great photo opportunity, Nancy and I caught the Chapel lit with the outdoor lights, while the sky was just turning to day break.

Blueberry picking surprise.

The old saying "look before you leap" should really be "look before you reach"! I was out picking Blueberries with the family when I turned around to reach for some on a different bush when I realized the bush was already occupied. This Porcupine was up in the bush about two feet off the ground enjoying a snack. Luckily I had my camera on me and was able to get quite a few good images before my prickly friend decided it had enough and climbed down and waddled away.
